BLOOD PRESSURE

Blood pressure is a crucial indicator of cardiovascular health, representing the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body. It is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded with two numbers: systolic and diastolic pressures. The systolic pressure (the higher number) measures the force exerted when the heart contracts and pumps blood into the arteries. The diastolic pressure (the lower number) measures the pressure in the arteries when the heart is at rest between beats. A normal blood pressure reading is typically around 120/80 mmHg. Blood pressure that consistently exceeds this level may indicate hypertension, or high blood pressure, which is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke, and heart failure.

Hypertension can be classified into primary (essential) hypertension, which develops gradually over many years and is the most common type, and secondary hypertension, which is caused by an underlying condition such as kidney disease, hormonal disorders, or certain medications. High blood pressure often has no noticeable symptoms, which makes it particularly dangerous because individuals may not be aware of their condition until significant damage has occurred. Managing blood pressure is essential for reducing the risk of serious health complications. This typically involves lifestyle modifications like maintaining a balanced diet low in sodium, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, quitting smoking, and limiting alcohol consumption. In some cases, medication may be necessary to control blood pressure and reduce the risk of related health problems. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider are important for monitoring blood pressure levels and adjusting treatment as needed.
